husband Odysseus, an image that agrees with her symbolic representation of chastity and marital faith. But reading Homer’s Odyssey we are presented with additional and equally important views of Penelope. Among these views are the ones of her as a queen of Ithaca and also her as a person and not as a symbol. In my sculpture proposal I choose to interpret and materialize the above views by representing Penelope as a seated figure that is fragmented, made out of pieces, the building blocks of a kingdom, the building blocks of a family, the building blocks of herself.

Penelope as a queen absent of her king had to face threats against the kingdom of Ithaca, threats against the life of her son and also threats against her own life, but with her intelligence, elusiveness and stoicism managed to overcome all the dangers and the perilous situations for the twenty year period of Odysseus’s absent. In the sculpture her elusiveness, intelligence and stoicism are reflected by representing her body and also her throne as a three dimensional puzzle that is constructed and deconstructed making her existence a process of being and not being, “where before was a thigh, a hand or a breast the next moment is thin air”.

The sculpture reveals to us the trials of a kingdom but also the ones of a body. The composition is made in such way that the fragmented figure is on the one side and the pieces/fragments that are missing are on the other side in order to leave the middle part void for us to imagine the process of construction and deconstruction. A process that we can relate to, a process that unveils the truth that we as persons under a difficult and long lasting situation we remain the “same” but we also become “others”, a continuous flow from who we were to who we are, a deceptively reversible process.

There is also another interpretation of Penelope, the one of the suitors’ perspective in which Penelope is the ultimate goal that cannot be achieved, a whole that only pieces and bits of it they can have, a puzzle without solution. Who is ambitious enough to continue playing such a game and who has the wisdom to withdraw?

Fanourios Moraitis

Νίκος
